Take your fear and throw it away! with Dímitra Valaváni, Déspoina TziákiAre you afraid to make a shield out of books, a sword out of fairy tales, make your fear a shuttle, and throw it away? What is fear? Fear is a human emotion caused by the awareness of a real or imagined danger or threat. It is a mechanism that protects us, a normal body reaction without thinking. But how can we help children express and face their fears? Books and fairy tales are a beautiful solution. Through these, children find an outlet while at the same time allowing them to keep the channel of communication open, making them feel safe to share their feelings and anxieties with us. How exactly can this be done? Educators Dimitra Valavani and Despina Tziaki, members of the fairy tale dissemination and storytelling group Paramythades en Plo, coordinate a workshop for parents and propose ideas on how we can manage children's fears. The workshop will take place at the Sporaki bookstore.
*Participation in all workshops is free. Instead of a fee, you can donate stationery (pencils, erasers, sharpeners, crayons, drawing blocks, etc.), which will be donated to the children of the Association of Voluntary Offering and Support “Orizondas”.

Presentation of the comic book "The dead brother" by Eva PoulopoulouThe philologist Anna Lampardakis and the creator of the comic Eva Poulopoulou talk about the original comic "Tou nekro brodrou", the most popular folk song and its composition in a comic. Narrated by actress Marinella Vlahaki. The folk song Tou Nekrou Aderfou is one of the oldest narrative songs of the Balkans with its origins lost in the depths of the centuries. It was sung in versions with a single theme based on the common roots of the peoples of the region, defying physical borders and cultural differences. Timeless ideas such as the sanctity of the oath, the power of the lament and the curse, perceptions of life in the outback, but also magical elements such as the resurrection and talking birds, compose a haunting, fascinating tale. Enjoy it in a work that combines the richness of folk tradition and the singularity of folk song language, with the contemporary, direct and intimate visual language of comic books. Zorbas – Beautiful green stoneMarina Aretaki, Ph.D. in Modern Greek Philology of the Sorbonne University, Paraskevi Vasiliadis, curator of collections and deputy director of the Nikos Kazantzakis Museum, present the new graphic novel "ZORBAS, green stone Beauty" by Antonis Nikolopoulos (Soloúp) from "Dioptra" publications with the presence of the creator. An interesting discussion about Nikos Kazantzakis, the conception, creation, and composition of Antonis Nikolopoulos (Soloúp). "How to take on this Dragon?" writes Kazantzakis about Zorba. How to face two dragons today, with Nikos Kazantakis and Zorbas, even using the language of comics to re-render the iconic and much-translated novel Life and State of Alexis Zorbas? In addition to having to fight the myth and the dominant image of the character, as embodied by Anthony Quinn in Michalis Kakogianni's film Zorba the Greek? Life, love, God, death, Dionysus, Buddha, Nietzsche, Bergson, Shakespeare, Dante, Rodin... Soloúp in the graphic novel "ZORBAS, green stone beautiful" does not make a simple metaphor but attempts to retell the episodes of the specific novel. It interferes with the flow and rearranges the iconic stories while at the same time trying to avoid the strong stereotypes of the cinematic Zorba. Thus, following the spirit of the Kazantzakis text, he proposes a new narrative of word and image, a new journey, philosophical, grotesque, and tragic, to the modern reader. The aim of the workshop will be to share this information we gathered during the creation of the form and at the same time the creation of a form by the participants after the workshop. In addition to lots of laughter, this specific process promotes cooperation in a special way, as the creation of characters results in countless other combinations which the participants place after discussion. Throughout his work, he investigates the language and possibilities of the medium of comics, the extensibility of their use beyond their traditional function, the ideological background that characterizes publishing and translation practices, the possibilities for decentralized and group creation of projects, etc. Among his dozens of works, all designed to provoke discussions and reflections centered on comics, stand out Shapereader, an experimental tactile reading system of comics through ideograms (tactigrams) for visually impaired people, Katz, an indirect conversation with his Maus Art Spiegelman through his groundbreaking gestural appropriation and deliberate misrepresentation, TinTin Akei Kongo (TinTin in the Congo), an identical book to TinTin's editions but translated into Lingala, the language spoken in the Congo and in which this particular adventure of Herge had never been translated for obvious reasons, One Piece, consisting of all the published material of the popular manga in a single monstrous volume of 21,540 pages that can only be considered as a conceptual, non-utilitarian sculpture-spectacle, coming into "collision" with the content of et al. |

Presentation of mangaka Shintaro KagoPresentation of the great Manga creator Shintaro Kago! Shintaro Kago, born in 1969 in Tokyo, is the primary representative of ero-guro, and his work moves between the grotesque, the erotic, the strange and the uncanny. His stories are distinguished by the constant deconstruction of the comic's form and its reconstruction through narrative paradoxes and unpredictable scenario outcomes, essentially playing with and testing the reader's mind. Something similar is done in his book "The Princess of the Eternal Castle", published by Jemma Press. We witness a parallel narrative, two parallel worlds and their eternal ramifications. This book, as mentioned by the editor of Myrto Tselentis, was released simultaneously in Japanese, Italian and English, something scarce for manga. Shintaro Kago's new manga, "The Twelve Sisters of the Eternal Castle", will also make its debut at the festival, which will be published by Jemma Press. Speakers: Shintaro Kago, Myrto Celentis, Georgia Vania In collaboration with Jemma Press – Jemma Books & Comics. |

The First Greek ComicsViews of the Greek identity in contrast to the American model of the time. During my studies in France, I came into contact with the history of European comics. Among them, the Franco-Belgian school naturally held a dominant position. References to Greek comics were few and far between. Therefore, a reasonable question arose: "When did comics begin to be created in Greece?" Through suitable literature, research in the field and meetings with people there, I got a more specific picture. So I decided to focus on the example of the "Classically Illustrated" series of comics by Pehlivanidis (later "Atlantis") publications. This particular series was the first to distance itself from the American model and propose new perspectives in both the image and the texts. In this presentation we will explore together, analyzing examples, how Greek publishers and artists worked in the 1950s. Their goal was to transform an up to then American comic book series (Classics Illustrated) into something that would appeal to the Greek public. Their venture was a huge commercial success. Presentation of the comic book "War of Lucas"Based on real events from the life of George Lucas, this comic tells the true story of how the visionary director—saved from certain death at a young age—created the Star Wars epic. The hell of casting roles, nightmarish filming, secret love affairs, and fights between actors are just some of the unknown behind-the-scenes related to the film. Now, decades later, the reader can finally witness all those events that gave birth to one of the most iconic films in cinema history. Lucas War is a breathless dive into the unequal battle of creation. It's exciting yet fun at the same time. It is an absolute "making of", a delightful success story, a struggle of will, but also a lesson for the younger directors. Above all, however, it is an ode to the magic of childhood and the power of perseverance when all seems lost. And it proves that there will always be people determined to pursue their dreams, even if they are "in a galaxy far, far away from here". (from the back cover of the book) |
