Advice to a Young Pirate

◷ 21 September 2026 – 4 October 2026⌖ Θέατρο Μίκης Θεοδωράκης

Advice to a Young Pirate is an imaginative guide to how children and adults alike can become “pirates”. Written with humour and creativity, its advice calls for the development of a wide range of skills. Appearance, physical training and a good crew are the first steps. Planning, teamwork, foresight and entertainment are essential for a smooth voyage. However, the winds are not always favourable for young pirates, so they must also possess patience, composure and compassion to overcome the challenges they face. Imagination, faith, true friendship and innovative ideas will guide them towards new worlds, exciting journeys and meaningful relationships.

Reading the children's comic Advice to a Young Pirate can be a multidimensional experience. The advice offered to aspiring pirates is, in fact, valuable life advice. The humour, the concise narrative style and the exceptional illustrations invite us to reflect on how we might live our lives more joyfully and ethically.

The reading experience is further enriched by numerous intertextual references. Readers may recognise elements from Homer's Odyssey, Katsushika Hokusai's famous artwork The Great Wave off Kanagawa, Antonis Vavagiannis's well-known phrase “They seem perfectly lovely to me”, as well as references to popular films and fictional characters. In fact, these very intertextual connections and influences formed the basis of an exhibition conceived by Georgia Zachari and Marios Ioannidis.

The book's narrative structure is equally original, operating on three distinct levels. The main narrator addresses the reader with advice expressed in a lyrical style and literary language. On the second level, the dialogue within the pirates' speech bubbles adopts a humorous, informal and conversational tone.

Finally, on the third level, Georgia Zachari's illustrations serve as the connecting thread. Rich, cinematic and visually captivating, they make innovative use of expansive double-page spreads depicting the sea and the ship, bringing Spyros Giannakopoulos's truly wonderful story to life with energy and enthusiasm.

Spyros Giannakopoulos is a children's author and columnist. He studied at the Athens University of Economics and Business and, for several years, contributed articles to Kathimerini newspaper on literature, comics and music. He also collaborated with the comics magazine Ble Komitis (Blue Comet). He received the Greek State Literary Award for Young Adult Literature for his book Cosmonaut.

Georgia Zachari studied Art History at the School of Fine Arts, where she completed her thesis entitled Representations of the Urban Landscape in Contemporary Greek Comics: Athens and Thessaloniki. Since then, she has decided that she would rather draw comics featuring cities herself than write about those created by others.

She began publishing her work in 2017, and in 2019 she collaborated with Giorgos Gousis and Panagiotis Pantazis on the comic Festival, created to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival.

In 2021, together with her friend Stella, she adapted Alki Zei's novel The Wildcat Under Glass into a graphic novel.
